Preparing SAP landscapes for e-invoicing mandates

SAP systems hold the data e-invoicing mandates need — but rarely in the shape mandates require. What to assess before the next go-live date is fixed.

When a new e-invoicing or digital reporting mandate is announced, SAP-running organizations usually ask the same first question: “does SAP support this?” The honest answer is that SAP provides serious building blocks — SAP Document and Reporting Compliance (SAP DRC), SAP Integration Suite, extension options on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) — but a mandate is met by a landscape, not by a product name.

Assess the data before the connectivity

Most mandate projects underestimate master data. Tax classifications, partner identifiers, units of measure and payment terms all flow into legally validated documents. A field that has been “good enough” for internal processes for a decade can fail format validation on day one.

Run a data readiness check against the target format early — on real production samples, not test data. The findings typically shape the project plan more than any connectivity decision.

Decide where compliance logic lives

There is a genuine architectural choice between handling compliance inside the SAP stack — for example with SAP DRC where it covers your countries — and handling it in an external integration layer that serves SAP and non-SAP systems alike. Both are legitimate; the right answer depends on your country mix, your non-SAP systems, your provider relationships and your team's operating model.

What matters is deciding deliberately. Landscapes that grow one country-specific point solution at a time end up with five ways to send an invoice and no single view of whether any of them worked.

Plan for operations, not just go-live

Mandates change after go-live: new document types, format versions, validation rules. Whichever architecture you choose, budget for a standing capability — monitoring, exception handling and controlled change — rather than a one-off project. The organizations that struggle are rarely the ones with the wrong tool; they are the ones with nobody clearly responsible for the flow.

The practical takeaway

A mandate is met by a landscape, not a product name. Assess your data early, decide deliberately where compliance logic lives, and budget for the operation — not just the go-live.
